✂️ The Art of the Trim: Pruning Techniques to Encourage Healthier Plants and Fuller Blooms
Share
Hello Precision Pruners and Craft Garden Customers!
Pruning—the selective removal of parts of a plant—may seem intimidating, but it is essential for plant health, shape, and maximizing flower and fruit production. The key is understanding when and where to cut.
1. Why We Prune
-
Health: Remove all dead, diseased, or damaged (the "3 Ds") branches or leaves immediately. This prevents disease spread and redirects energy to healthy growth.
-
Airflow: Thinning the center of a dense shrub or tree increases air circulation, which helps prevent fungal issues like powdery mildew.
-
Shape and Size: Pruning directs growth. Cutting above a leaf node encourages the plant to branch out in that direction.
2. Timing for Blooms
-
Spring/Summer Bloomers (e.g., Roses): Prune when they are dormant (winter/very early spring), before new growth starts.
-
Late Summer/Fall Bloomers (e.g., Hydrangeas): Prune immediately after they finish flowering. Pruning late will cut off next year's flower buds.
3. The Right Cut
Always use sharp, clean tools and cut at a 45-degree angle just above a leaf node or bud.
