❄️ Winterizing Your Garden: Steps to Protect Perennials and Pots from Frost

Hello Prepared Planters and Craft Garden Customers!

As the growing season ends, your final gardening duty is to prepare your plants and tools for the harsh cold of winter. Winterizing involves protecting tender plants from frost damage, ensuring perennial plants return robustly in the spring, and safeguarding your equipment. Proper winter preparation is an investment in next year's gardening success.

Tuck your garden in safely for the cold months. Craft Garden provides the essential checklist for protecting your perennials, tender shrubs, and container plants from freezing temperatures.

1. Protecting Plants in the Ground

  • Perennial Cutback: Wait until the foliage of perennials (like hostas or daylilies) has died back naturally (turned brown) after the first hard frost. Cut the dead foliage back to a few inches above the soil line.

  • Heavy Mulch: Apply a 4–6 inch blanket of shredded leaves or straw mulch over the crowns of tender perennials. This insulates the soil, moderates temperature fluctuations, and prevents "frost heave" (when freezing and thawing pushes roots out of the soil).

2. Saving Container Plants (Pots)

Container plants are highly vulnerable because their roots are exposed to air temperature.

  • Bring Indoors: Move all tender potted plants (citrus, tropicals, geraniums) to a sheltered location (garage, basement, or a sunny window) before the first hard frost.

  • Empty and Store: Empty and clean all ceramic, terracotta, or plastic pots that are not winter-proof. If left outdoors with soil inside, terracotta and ceramic pots will absorb water, freeze, and crack. Store them upside down in a sheltered spot.

3. Tool and Irrigation Care

  • Clean and Store: Thoroughly clean all your hand tools and pruners, removing all dirt and rust. Apply a light coat of oil to prevent rust, and store them in a dry place.

  • Drain Water: Drain all water from hoses, sprinklers, and irrigation lines. If water freezes inside a hose or faucet, it will expand and crack the material, causing permanent damage. Disconnect and store hose nozzles indoors.

Winter preparation ensures you start the spring with healthy plants, intact pots, and rust-free tools.
