🌱 Kitchen Herbs All Year: Essential Tips for Growing Thriving Herbs Indoors
Share
Hello Culinary Gardeners and Craft Garden Customers!
Imagine having fresh basil for pasta or mint for tea, regardless of the weather outside. Growing culinary herbs indoors is a rewarding way to add flavor to your cooking and greenery to your kitchen, but they require the right conditions to truly thrive.
Â
1. Light Requirements
Â
Herbs like Basil, Thyme, and Rosemary are sun-lovers. They need a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
-
Best Placement: A south-facing window is ideal.
-
Supplementation: If natural light is lacking (especially in winter), use a small, dedicated grow light placed 6–12 inches above the plants.
Â
2. Watering and Drainage
Â
The biggest killer of indoor herbs is overwatering.
-
Pots: Always plant herbs in containers with excellent drainage holes.
-
Technique: Water deeply until the water runs out of the bottom, then wait until the top inch of soil is completely dry before watering again.
Â
3. Harvesting for Growth (Pinching)
Â
To keep your herbs bushy and prevent them from getting leggy, pinch or trim the growing tips regularly, right above a set of leaves. This encourages the plant to branch out sideways, yielding more leaves for your kitchen.
