🗑️ Gold for Your Garden: The Simple Steps to Creating Nutrient-Rich Compost at Home
Share
Hello Soil Stewards and Craft Garden Customers!
Composting is the ultimate act of gardening sustainability. By turning kitchen scraps and yard waste into nutrient-rich "black gold," you create a perfect, free soil amendment that dramatically improves water retention, soil structure, and plant health—all while reducing landfill waste.
Â
1. The Essential Ingredients (Browns and Greens)
Â
A healthy compost pile needs a balance of two types of materials:
-
Greens (Nitrogen-Rich): Wet, fresh materials like fruit/vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, and fresh grass clippings. These provide the nitrogen needed for microbial activity.
-
Browns (Carbon-Rich): Dry, woody materials like dried leaves, shredded newspaper, cardboard, and wood chips. These provide the carbon that adds bulk and aeration.
The Ratio: Aim for a ratio of roughly 2 parts Brown to 1 part Green.
Â
2. The Simple Process
Â
-
Choose a Container: A simple wire bin, plastic tumbler, or open pile works.
-
Layer: Alternate thin layers of browns and greens.
-
Water: Keep the pile consistently damp, like a wrung-out sponge (never soggy).
-
Turn: Turn the pile with a fork or crank every 1–2 weeks. Turning introduces oxygen, which fuels the decomposition process and speeds up composting.
Composting is gardening's way of recycling, providing the best food for your plants naturally.
