🌞 Beat the Heat: Protecting Your Plants from Summer Stress and Sunburn

Hello Heatwave Managers and Craft Garden Customers!

While plants love the sun, extreme summer heat (high temperatures combined with low humidity) causes significant stress, leading to burnt leaves, dropped blooms, and a dramatic slowdown in growth. Recognizing the signs of heat stress and taking proactive steps to mitigate it is essential for maintaining a vibrant, productive summer garden.

Keep your garden cool and productive all season long. Craft Garden provides practical strategies and tools for protecting your plants from the harsh effects of summer heat and intense sun.

1. Recognizing and Addressing Stress

  • Signs of Stress: Wilting leaves (despite watering), browning or crisp edges (sunburn), and flowers dropping prematurely.

  • Emergency Water: If a container plant is severely wilted, place the entire pot into a bucket of water for 30 minutes to allow the soil to fully rehydrate.

2. The Critical Role of Water and Timing

Your watering strategy must change dramatically during a heatwave.

  • Deep Watering: Water deeply and slowly in the early morning before 10 a.m. Watering in the heat of the day causes rapid evaporation and can scorch leaves.

  • Containers: Containers dry out faster than garden beds. Check them twice daily during peak heat. Consider grouping containers together to create a microclimate that reduces wind and evaporation.

3. Shade and Protection

Provide physical barriers against the most intense afternoon sun.

  • Shade Cloth: Use shade cloth (available in various densities, such as 30-50%) draped over hoops or frames to filter the afternoon sun (1 p.m. to 4 p.m.). This reduces the leaf temperature and prevents sunburn.

  • Mulch: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch (shredded wood, straw, or pine needles) around the base of your plants. Mulch is crucial—it insulates the soil, keeping the roots cool and dramatically reducing water evaporation.

4. Adjusting Care

  • Avoid Fertilizing: Do not apply fertilizer during extreme heat. Plants are under stress and cannot utilize the nutrients, which can actually burn the roots.
