đź”® Miniature Worlds: A Beginner's Guide to Building and Caring for a Closed Terrarium
Share
Hello Miniature Makers and Craft Garden Customers!
Terrariums are self-contained ecosystems—miniature gardens housed in glass containers. A closed terrarium is fascinating because it recycles its own water, creating a humid, tropical environment that is largely self-sustaining and a beautiful piece of living decor.
Â
1. The Essential Layers (Bottom Up)
Â
-
Drainage Layer: A layer of pebbles or gravel at the very bottom. This prevents water from pooling around the plant roots.
-
Charcoal Layer: A thin layer of activated charcoal. This absorbs toxins and odors, keeping the environment fresh.
-
Barrier: A thin sheet of mesh or moss to separate the charcoal from the soil.
-
Substrate: A thick layer of high-quality, sterile potting soil suitable for tropical plants.
Â
2. Choosing the Right Plants
Â
Select small, slow-growing plants that love high humidity:
-
Mosses and Ferns: Excellent for the forest floor look.
-
Small Tropical Plants: Miniature Fittonias (Nerve Plants) or small Pilea varieties.
Avoid succulents and cacti, which rot easily in high humidity.
Â
3. Care and Maintenance
Â
-
Light: Place the terrarium in bright, indirect light (never direct sun, which can cook the plants).
-
Water: If built correctly, you may only need to mist or add a spoonful of water a few times a year. If the inside of the glass is constantly fogged, it needs the lid removed for a few hours to vent excess moisture.
