🗓️ Seasonal Survival Guide: Essential Fall/Spring Garden Prep
Share
Hello Dedicated Gardeners and Craft Garden Planners!
The secret to a stunning, bountiful garden isn't what you do during the peak season—it's what you do during the transition seasons of fall and spring. These are the times for preparation, protection, and planting the seeds for future success.
Ignoring seasonal maintenance can lead to lost plants, poor yields, and unnecessary pest problems. At Craft Garden, we have outlined the most critical tasks and the tools you'll need to master both the fall tidy-up and the spring awakening.
Â
Phase 1: The Fall Tidy-Up (Preparing for Rest)
Â
Fall is about putting your garden to bed. Proper preparation now ensures your plants survive winter and your soil is ready for spring.
-
1. Clean Up Debris: Rake up all fallen leaves, spent annuals, and diseased plant material. Leaving this debris provides shelter for pests and fungal spores to overwinter.
-
Tool Need: Durable Garden Rake and Wheelbarrow or Garden Cart.
-
-
2. Soil Enrichment: Top-dress garden beds with compost or well-rotted manure. Do not till heavily; simply lay the enrichment on the surface. The winter snow and rain will help work the nutrients into the soil naturally.
-
Tool Need: Quality Compost and Small Hand Trowel.
-
-
3. Protect Tender Plants: Move potted perennials indoors. For permanent outdoor plants, apply a thick layer of mulch (straw, wood chips) around the base to insulate the roots from harsh freezing and thawing cycles.
-
Tool Need: Gardening Gloves and Mulch Spreader.
-
Â
Phase 2: The Spring Awakening (Preparing for Growth)
Â
Spring is the time to check your work, refresh the soil, and begin the growth cycle.
-
1. Soil Check and Amendment: Once the soil is workable (no longer frozen), check the pH and nutrient levels. Amend the soil based on your needs, adding more compost or a slow-release granular fertilizer.
-
Tool Need: Soil Testing Kit and Garden Fork for light aeration.
-
-
2. Essential Pruning: Prune away any dead, damaged, or diseased growth from shrubs and perennials. This encourages healthy new growth and proper shape. Be sure to check specific pruning times for each plant!
-
Tool Need: Bypass Pruners or Loppers (ensure they are sharp!).
-
-
3. Early Planting: Start seeds indoors or plant frost-tolerant vegetables (like peas, kale, and lettuce) directly into the ground once the danger of a hard freeze has passed.
-
Tool Need: Seed Starting Trays, Potting Mix, and a Labeling Kit.
-
By dedicating time and using the right tools during these vital seasonal windows, you maximize the health and vitality of your Craft Garden for the entire growing year.
